In view of the outbreak of Covid-19, to add an extra layer of protection, Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) installed the state of the art Ultra Violet baggage disinfector at the international terminal of Kochi airport. From the day one itself, the baggage of Vande Bharath Mission passengers have been disinfecting with the help of UV baggage disinfector developed by Defence Research Development Organization’s Naval Physical and Oceanography Laboratory (NPOL) at Kochi.
The NPOL team had worked in tandem with CIAL’s IT team to successfully install the device at the arrival terminal complex where the baggage get a UV bath on both sides as they pass through a tunnel, the mouths of which were fitted with UV lamps. At first the luggage is misted with Sodium hypochlorite as it comes out of the aircraft and then will be loaded in the conveyor belt. The UV tunnel is installed around the conveyor so that the luggage swifts smoothly as UV rays bath it from both the mouths ensuring the protection of persons including the customs officials who are supposed to handle them. The NPOL team had an extensive work out with the doctors of Kochi Medical College to fix the exact dosage of UV rays to be lighted over the luggage.
